Teaching and Reading Difference in Colonial Archival Collections by Kellee E. Warren Online
In this lecture in Broome Library's Black Scholars on Black Lives series, Kellee Warren will discuss some of the details included in her article “Reimagining Special Collections Instruction: A Special Case of Haiti,” which was published in The American Archivist, fall/winter 2020 issue. She proposes how archival instructors might deliver instruction with colonial collections using a culturally sustaining approach to center the voices of those who have been silenced and/or erased. For a more informed discussion, attendees may want to read the article and review the ACRL RBMS Instruction and Outreach document on Ethically Teaching Primary Sources that Reflect Histories of Violence, Hate, and Oppression before the lecture.
Kellee E. Warren is currently Assistant Professor and Special Collections Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Ms. Warren’s article, “Reimagining Special Collections Instruction: A Special Case of Haiti” was published in The American Archivist, fall/winter 2020. Her article “We Need These Bodies, but Not Their Knowledge: Black Women in the Archival Science Profession, and Their Connection to the Archives of Enslaved Black Women in the French Antilles” was published in Library Trends, spring 2016. Her research interests include critical pedagogies, digital humanities, oral history, and the labor practices of special collections librarians.
10 student attendees will win a raffled copy of Ms. Warren’s book choice, The Toni Morrison Book Club (2020) by Juda Bennett, Winnifred Brown-Glaude, Cassandra Jackson, and Piper Kendrix Williams
