Yoga and White Public Space Online
Broome Library's 2022 Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month lecture features Dr. Rumya S. Putcha.
Goat yoga, beer yoga, trap yoga, acro yoga, holy yoga, museum yoga. These are just a few examples of the way yoga has become domesticated in the Anglo-American context, particularly in public spaces. In this lecture Rumya Putcha explores how that happened and what it reveals about yoga as well as the way we think about public space.
Bio: Rumya S. Putcha is an assistant professor in the Institute for Women’s Studies as well as in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia. Her research interests center on colonial and anticolonial thought, particularly around constructs of citizenship, performance, race, gender, sexuality, and the law. Her first book, The Dancer’s Voice: Performance and Womanhood in Transnational India, is forthcoming (November 2022) with Duke University Press.
Book giveaway! 10 student attendees will win copies of Dr. Putcha's choice of book, Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History by Michel-Rolph Trouillot.
