Black Scholars on Black Lives Lecture: Candice C. Robinson, "Our Kind of Social Movement" Online
Description: This lecture will explore expectations, responsibilities, contributions, and reality of the Black Middle Class and Black Elite in between and during moments of heightened social protest, such as the Civil Rights Movement and #BlackLivesMatter.
Bio: Candice C. Robinson, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She earned her Sociology degrees from Hampton University (BA), University of Iowa (MA), and University of Pittsburgh (PhD). Dr. Robinson’s research agenda is motivated by a commitment to understanding the contributions of the Black Middle Class and Black Elite broadly defined to the longstanding civil rights organization the National Urban League and American society generally. Her work has far-reaching implications in the areas of race, class, social inequality, and social movements. In addition to her published work on the Black Middle Class, civic engagement, and Black Millennials, Dr. Robinson is under contract to co-author (with Veronica Newton Burke, Shantee Rosado, Arryn Green, and Maretta McDonald) the Sociology of Cardi B (Routledge Press). A book dedicated to engaging with understandings of race and racial identity, class, gender, feminism, motherhood, media, fashion, and politics through an analysis of the public life and music of Cardi B. Dr. Robinson's choice of book for the lecture is Lawrence Otis's Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class. Ten student attendees will win a copy!
